Rose Furigay Philippines University Shooting Update 3 Dead in Graduation Shooting

Police said three people were killed in a shooting at a university graduation ceremony in the Philippines' capital region on Sunday, including a former mayor from the volatile south. The former mayor of the southern city of Lamitan, Rose Furigay, was shot and killed in Quezon City, according to local police chief Remus Medina.

In an interview with reporters, Medina said that the suspect had been wounded in a shootout with a campus security officer and had been arrested after a chase. The city of Quezon is part of the Manila capital region, an urban sprawl that includes 16 cities and more than 13 million people.

Medina said Furigay was about to attend her daughter's graduation at Ateneo de Manila University, one of the country's most prestigious law schools. In addition to being a native of Lamitan city in Basilan province, a stronghold of Abu Sayyaf, a pro-Islamist State group known for its banditry and kidnapping, the suspect had no family members at the graduation.
